How to pick an Interior Designer?

So, you are doing a renovation on your kitchen? Or maybe a bathroom or laundry. Or you may be building a new home for you and your family. Which means you probably need an Interior Designer who can help you achieve the outcome you’re looking for. Someone who can put all your Pinterest ideas into your own home and fully achieve your design goals.

Picking an interior designer for your project can be super overwhelming. You have probably already googled “Interior designer” or you’ve spent hours scrolling on Instagram to find the perfect person for your project. If this is you, we have some pointers for you. The reason you might be struggling to find the right person or business is because building a new home or doing a renovation is a massive thing to do. We call it a huge achievement! So firstly, congratulations! It’s a big moment for you and your home.

Doing a renovation or build, doesn’t happen overnight. You are going to be spending hours, days, weeks and probably months with your chosen designer (of course depending on the size of your project). We want to help you choose the right person! In this blog, we are going to go through some of our top pointers on how to pick the right interior designer for YOU! Ultimately, this is a very important decision. Tori  believes that when picking an Interior Designer, you need to consider the following things: You want someone who listens, is approachable, has good reviews from clients and of course, someone who has done something you like.

Listening to your client is very important. Our very first step in the design process is sitting down with you and having a consultation. We usually do this onsite, so we can get a feel of your space. We will ask you questions like; What you like? What you dislike? What you want to achieve in your space? We also believe it is very important to get to know you on a more personal level. We want to find out what your hobbies are, who lives in your home, what you will be using the space for, what do you do on the weekends, what is your job etc. Learning about you, helps designers when designing your space. Every space and design is unique and needs to be unique to you. When you are picking the right designer for your project, make sure you consider someone who wants to build a relationship with you and get to know you as well as your space.

Being approachable is probably my top tip. As an interior designer myself, I pride myself on my very “human like” approach. What I mean by this is, that although I have a very professional approach, I are very much the same as you! I want you to be a part of the process. I want to take you out with us to see the options and suppliers I am looking to put forward within our concept. You want a designer who will involve you as much as possible, because this is your journey and only yours! Yes your designer will be there with you, but this is all for you, and you need to be there when making the decisions.

Having good reviews or testimonials from previous clients is VERY important. If you are looking at a designer for your next project, make sure they have something to back their “sales pitch”. I want you to feel comfortable with who you choose to take on your new project with. VN Design prides ourselves in our customer service and absolutely love creating a relationship with our clients. Check out our testimonials here!

My last tip for picking an interior designer for your next project, is choose someone who you’ve seen some of their work and projects and you like it! There would be nothing worse than picking a designer, yet you hate their work. Make sure you have a look at their previous projects, Instagram, pinterest, everything! Pick out things you like from their projects. It could be a colour, the style, a particular design feature, really anything that draws you into their work. You need to feel confident in the designer because we can guarantee you will be seeing their name in your ‘recent’ calls quite a lot during your renovation.

There you have it! My top tips on picking an interior designer for your project. It can be a very daunting process, but you are better off doing your homework at the very start to avoid any upsets later. I hope that after reading this blog, you consider my personal tips on picking an interior designer for upcoming new build or renovation. Thanks for reading!
